As climate change intensifies, these biotechnologies will be indispensable for achieving sustainable intensification, but their success hinges on global collaboration, ethical governance, and inclusive innovation. Initiatives like the OpenCRISPR project aim to democratize gene-editing tools (Cohen, 2023), while public-sector partnerships (e.g., CIMMYT’s drought-tolerant maize) ensure affordability. Despite these advances, equitable access remains a challenge, as smallholder farmers in developing regions often lack access to patented technologies (Toenniessen et al., 2008). As these tools become more affordable and user-friendly, precision agriculture is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable intensification, ensuring food security while preserving natural resources for future generations.

The curriculum includes courses in Animal Science, Plant Science, Agricultural Biotechnology, Field crop Production Technology, Management Principles, Controlled Environment Technology, and Precision Agriculture. A consultant and a voice of expertise for various causes, organizations, government agencies and corporations Passionate about introducing modern technology for the development of sustainable agricultural practices Students of this programme will engage in research involving the integration of technologies towards solving critical issues affecting the production and accessibility of food.

It is enabled using apps, IoT sensors, drones, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. Resources include seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, machinery, etc. It supports identifying variations with heterogeneous fields to allow farmers to utilize resources and increase yield efficiently.

Looking ahead, edge computing, where AI processes data locally on devices like John Deere’s embedded farm computers, will reduce reliance on cloud connectivity, a critical advancement for remote areas. To address this, initiatives like FAO’s Digital Villages Program provide subsidized training and low-bandwidth FMS tools for rural communities (FAO, 2023). Despite these benefits, adoption barriers persist, particularly among smallholder farmers, due to high subscription costs (e.g., $500–$2,000 annually for premium FMS) and limited digital literacy. Farm management software (FMS) platforms, such as Granular, Agworld, and FarmLogs, serve as centralized hubs for data aggregation, analysis, and decision support, streamlining operations from planting to harvest.

Meanwhile, robotics companies such as Naïo Technologies SAS concentrate on specialty crops often overlooked by major tractor manufacturers. Software-focused competitors include Prospera Technologies Ltd. and CropX Technologies Ltd., which differentiate themselves through outcome-based pricing models that link fees to measurable yield improvements. International Business Machines Corporation provides analytics solutions to enterprise agribusinesses and government agencies. Integrate turnkey greenhouse solutions into their traditional machinery to strengthen customer relationships. Japan has committed to funding robotic rice transplanters to address its aging workforce. India aims to digitize 100 million smallholder farmers by 2027 through an INR 2,817 crore (USD 337 million) farmer database initiative.

Wireless IoT sensors embedded in fields continuously track soil moisture, temperature, pH, and nutrient levels at varying depths, transmitting data to cloud-based platforms for analysis. While land expansion provides short-term production gains, it incurs $6.3 trillion annually in hidden environmental costs from biodiversity loss, carbon emissions, and water depletion (TEEB, 2021). This approach preserves natural ecosystems that provide essential services – the conversion of just 1 hectare of tropical forest to farmland releases 200–500 tons of stored carbon while destroying biodiversity habitats (West et al., 2020).

Advanced hydroponic configurations, such as nutrient film technique (NFT) and deep-water culture (DWC), optimize root oxygenation and nutrient delivery, making them ideal for leafy greens like lettuce and herbs (Lei and Engeseth, 2021). The future of agricultural robotics lies in swarm robotics, edge AI, and human-robot collaboration, which promise to further optimize efficiency and scalability. The integration of autonomous tractors and AI-driven harvesting systems is revolutionizing agricultural productivity by addressing labor shortages, reducing operational costs, and enhancing precision in field operations ( Figure 4 ). Solar-powered IoT systems are also gaining traction, addressing energy barriers in off-grid areas; for instance, SunCulture’s solar drip kits in Kenya have cut water and energy costs by 50% for smallholders (Burney et al., 2023). Governments and agribusinesses are addressing these barriers through subsidies, training programs, and public-private partnerships to democratize access to PA technologies. However, challenges remain, particularly for smallholder farmers, including high initial costs, technical skill requirements, and limited rural connectivity (Pretty et al., 2018).

AgTech is reshaping the future of agriculture by making farming more efficient, sustainable, and profitable. Submit your pitch deck here and join the movement toward a sustainable agricultural future. As the global population rises and climate change disrupts traditional farming practices, technological innovation in agriculture has become essential. Examples of automation in agriculture include auto-drafting of livestock based on electronic ear tags and walk-over weighing systems. Examples include animal monitoring through electronic identification tags, prescriptive fertilisation based on soil moisture sensors, and geospatial mapping using GPS satellites.

Which offers great potential in reducing the time and investment of bringing new agricultural products to market. One AgTech application for digital twins is the development of (virtual) complex systems, utilizing a mass of data. Across the industry, Gen AI is anticipated to optimize processes, cut costs, and importantly, fuel innovations through creating new simulations and efficient code. Broiler Farming is a rapidly expanding market and agroinformatics trends top the list of important new developments in the high-tech space. As part of the wider impetus to feed the world’s growing population, agronomic researchers and engineering teams worked to develop smart Agtech tools and technologies that address the efficiency and productivity of production agriculture.
