Getting the Right Health Care Insurance in Spain
Health insurance in Spain ranks high in the world, beating only Germany and Austria in Europe. Although the Spanish healthcare system is fantastic, many expats prefer to take out more personal insurance, which makes it easier to visit an English-speaking medical doctor and save waiting times.
There are three main types of Spain healthcare – a national system where you get basic health cover (nationals do not have to pay for private treatment) and have to visit an approved medical institution (nationals must pay for private treatment); private healthcare (you have the choice of taking out a private policy or choosing a public health care scheme). The public sector is far more efficient, but some people may still find it hard to get an appointment with a specialist doctor (as this tends to be reserved for national patients only).
You can find private health cover in Spain which will cater for your needs in terms of hospital treatment, medication and surgery. If you go abroad, you may also find that there are various travel insurers that offer travel insurance, especially if you plan to go on holiday abroad. In the UK there are private insurance companies which are regulated by Ofcom. This means that they must provide cover for their customers within certain limits.
Private health cover in Spain usually includes maternity cover, accidental death benefits and bereavement cover (if you have any family members who are now deceased). It also often includes additional medical treatments such as cosmetic surgery and dental treatment, but these services may vary depending on the provider.
Health insurance in Spain is mainly for adults and works out at about two percent of the cost of a privately provided policy. If you are younger than 25 then you have to pay a higher fee because of the requirement that you are self-employed or work for a company which is part of a larger company. On top of this, there are costs involved with the application process and paperwork, especially if you wish to include children or grandchildren on your policy. For a typical adult you could have to fill out forms about a dozen times before you get accepted and this can be time-consuming and cumbersome.
When looking into health care insurance in Spain there are several different types of schemes available. For example, if you are unemployed and aged 45 or over you may qualify for a health savings account, which will pay for the majority of your medical costs and you can use this to pay off a large amount of your debts. such as credit card debts and loan repayments on home or car insurance . If you are a student then you may want to consider taking out a student Health Care Insurance Plan (HCP) and there are even schemes designed for students who want to stay at home with their parents.
If linkedin wish to go abroad on holiday then you may also find that you may have to get yourself covered on your holiday, but this varies according to the type of health insurance you have chosen. If you have had problems with your health in the past you may have to seek medical treatment in a hospital in Spain – but this will vary between the different types of Spain healthcare you may have. If you have had surgery abroad, it may be possible to return back to the UK. If you suffer from a pre-existing illness or have had to undergo emergency treatment abroad then you may have to go to a special clinic abroad which may charge you a large sum of money.
If you are self-employed or have a job which does not cover health care, you may not be able to take out a policy in Spain as there are very few options available. If you are aged under 25 and over 35, then you should be looking into private health care insurance, as most policies which are available in the UK are usually limited to people within a certain age group.
